Travel Documentation for Canadian Refugees

Canadian Refugees

Introduction

For refugees in Canada, obtaining proper travel documents is an essential step towards international mobility. This guide provides crucial information on how refugees can secure travel documents, along with eligibility criteria and application procedures. Additionally, Canada also offers a certificate of identity for certain permanent residents, adding further options for travel identification.

Eligibility for a Refugee Travel Document

To be eligible for a refugee travel document, individuals must hold protected person status in Canada. However, it’s important to note that refugee claimants are not eligible for this document. Moreover, a certificate of identity can be obtained under specific circumstances:

1. You have permanent residency in Canada but lack protected person status.
2. You are unable to obtain a passport from any other country.

Appearance of the Travel Document

The refugee travel document closely resembles a Canadian passport, featuring a distinct cover. However, it’s worth noting that the document will not list your nationality as Canadian. Consequently, you may need to obtain visas for countries where Canadian citizens enjoy visa-free access. An important limitation to remember is that this travel document cannot be used to visit the country from which you sought protection. For example, if you originally come from Afghanistan, the refugee travel document cannot be used for travel to Afghanistan.

Applying for a Travel Document

For protected persons residing in Canada, the application process for a travel document involves several steps. Unfortunately, applications from individuals outside of Canada are not accepted. Here’s a concise breakdown of the application process:

1. Complete the appropriate application form, tailored for adults or children.

2. Gather necessary documents, including:- Photocopy of your immigration status confirmation in Canada.

– Identity validation document (original or endorsed photocopy by a Canadian guarantor).
– Valid passport or travel document.
– Two identical passport-sized photos meeting specific requirements.
– Additional documents if applicable (stolen/lost document replacement, name change, gender change).
– Application package should include a guarantor and two references.

3. Pay applicable fees and include the receipt in your application package.

4. Mail the comprehensive application package to the specified address along with supporting documents.
